Sentics – finally on Bandcamp !

yay hurrah, my good friend Markus has finally uploaded his music as Sentics and its full of nice Peter Hook baselines and ethereal synths, I’ve come back to it to give it a proper listen as it was released back in late Feb

His far away, woozy hypnotic voice has the duality of being somewhat soothing then snarling . Lofi production that is “distant” if you like Young Marble Giants you’re gonna like Sentics. There’s something jarring and slightly robotic and I like that about them. iIs it lazy journalism to say Teutonic ? After all they are from Austria, they are informed by a lot of great post punk but Sentics stand out from the crowd of fey Indie poppers by being somewhat dark in tone – spacey Metronomic rhythms and I can see Markus doing a David Byrne like dance to the music in a vessel floating in space

OTOTABI with Ogaway :

Through the magic of record hunting and looking for music on vinyl that other people enjoy I found Yoshies channel OTOTABI with Ogaway DJ Ogaway the channel has these great videos of Tokyo set to music from new interesting artists and also Yoshie reviews new and old music with such enthusiam.

Yoshie, posted a photo on instagram of a really great japanese dub record by Dry and Heavy – Full Contact, this isnt a very well known record and so I reached out to her to talk about the album as think its a modern classic in dub, we started talking about record hunting and I told her the story about how where I found it in Teuchtler Schallplattenhandlung which is located at Windmühlgasse 10, 1060 Vienna. This is the shop in the beautiful movie Before Sunrise, its an essential destination for any music lover, Vienna is a bit like Paris lots of moody moochers mooching about but full of wonderful people and places to see, I lived there for nearly a decade and put on events club nights there and Teuchtler was where I found some great music.

The band Dry and Heavy should be better known, They created their own Japanese dubfest, Echomaniacs. This has featured Adrian Sherwood, Andrew Weatherall, Dennis Bovell and 3 Head, and Dry & Heavy have played in concert with Lee Perry, Horace Andy, Jah Shaka and Mad Professor. The world of japanese dub is a rich and beautiful kingdom and Dry and Heavy made really heavy dusty beautiful dub up there with Mad Professor and King Tubby level echo and depth BAMMMM !

But I digress, Yoshie and I started to message each other about music, record shops we love including Teuchtler Schallplattenhandlung where I bought Dry and Heavy. The shop has been there for over 70 years and has every type of music imaginable and the staff are incredible and also keen supporters of the music scene of Vienna from experimental noise artists to afro groups and classical music of course.

we talked particulary about Boards of Canada and Aphex twin and other music which has that rare quality and comforting melancholy feel, after about a year I finally got round to sending her Haram Tapes first album. She very kindly and expertly interviewed Pete and I about our music and made a brilliant interview which is edited and translated into japanese. It is a real honour to have someone take that time and interest in our music. What I love about her channel is the indepth personal reviews of the music like this one of Autechre 「SIGN」

I wanted to know more about her background as a music fan and “digger” as her channel on youtube is full of great albums and new artists like Metropolitan Project whos Late night demos will be featured in a new mix with other ambient / electronic music artists Cruel Diagonals Ivy Barkakati and Sumatran Black

please watch our interview it was a lot of fun making it and it must have have taken ages to edit down as we talked a lot !!

I asked Yoshie a few questions over email as to her background and the artists she loves and record shopping ,shes so supportive of new underground artists (links below) and I really hope you will subscribe to her channel !

Hi Yoshie ! Please can you write a little background about yourself

>>> I live in Tokyo and I’m from Kyoto, the ancient capital.I work in video production as freelancer, TV director, making videos for companies, for events…I used to work for a music show and I did many interview with artists ; but this was very commercial music which earnt good money ( used for buying Vinyl !!) Or I make documentary videos for TV, so I like to interview people and get to know them. About music I’ve never made music and I’m just doing a little DJing . There were times when I didn’t listen to music at all ! Anyway I’m just a musc fan! I was in France in 2001 for 2 years, so I can imagine Europe a little bit.

Well I hope you get a chance to come back to Europe and would be great to dj together thats one of my favourite things to do is to do a dj set b2b with other djs and play records for like 4- 8 hours, in fact its probably the thing i miss most because of corona so many music fans cant do this and sharing vinyl / djing , the mix is not as important, its the choice and selection !

do you have any dj mixes online we can share  ?
>>> I don’t have any mixes. Sorry. There are some people whove asked me about my mixies, so one day I will try to make one . I’m not good DJ I just select my favorite music.

I think thats the key thing for DJs selecting their favorite music , thats a DJ someone with passion, with a lot of business techno / instagramer djs these days everything is about image and thats so ugh yuck ! Plus the music a lot of the big DJS and even some underground djs seems to have just become lo grade tech house / buisness techno, anyway i dont want to bang on about this but your channel / attitude and enthusiams is so needed today !

What are your favourite clubs to go to in Tokyo ?
and how often do you go record hunting ?>>> Womb, Contact, VisionWomb was a cool club. I liked it before. Many famous techno djs came there from overseas, like Derrick May, Jeff Mils, Carl Craig, Richie Hawtin, Sven Vath, Joris Voorn… but now it’s becoming more EDM than techno –

Oh no ! EDM is the worst I’m sorry to hear that !
What has been your most amazing find in a record shop ? >>> LFO’s vinyls, EP “Tied Up” and Album “Advanced”

I rarely see LFO records Or Kraftwerk’s EP “Tour de France”, red label (I think it’s rare)I’m not a proper collector so I’m not sure which is rare or not. Just I wanted LFO’s vinyl, and when I found it, I was so excited!

Are there any shops you want to give a special mention to ? >>> I don’t have any in Tokyo. but I wanna introduce record shops in Kyoto on my channel. I don’t know very much about them yet but one day! Because I’m from Kyoto.  I was Born and raised in Kyoto, its a beautiful city.

Brilliant, I think its great youre making these videos especially sharing the records you find, your enthusiam is something wonderful !
Any artists you want to mention here ?
>>> Haram Tapes,( thanks! ) Metropolitan Project, Timo Carlier, ATN soul & NoamleAll of them are the artists who cooperated with the interview on my channel. I like them very much! As a well-known artists I like, Four Tet, Carl Craig, Moritz Von Oswold, Telefon Tel Aviv, The Orb, Isolee… and many warp’s artists like Aphex Twin, Autechre, Two lone Swordsmen, Clark, Plaid, Flying Lotus, GAIKA… Japanese artists; Ken Ishii, Takkyu Ishino, DJ Krush, Boom Boom Satellites, U.F.O.
You love Warp artists a lot I noticed, I really like that you have an affection to this classic label , are there any other record labels you want to mention that have the same ethos of outstanding quality ? For me 4Ad is a label similar to Warp in that every release will be something special >>> I don’t know 4AD. I’ll check it out! I like Skam records, Ninja Tune, R&S…Off course Warp Records! Only famous labels, actually.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions Yoshie!

Was very healthy from mid 80s up to the mid 2000s
With a wide range of promoters including Destiny for Hardcore and Drum and Bass,
Cocoshebeen at the Opera House and in its
early days it saw sets from Laurent Garnier,
Carl Cox , Deepdish, mid week specials like AWOL with Kenny Ken Mickey Finn and
Nicky Blackmarket packing out the club.
Also of note was The Manor and Madisons who had regular appearances from Sasha and Digweed,
LTJ Bukem , CJ Bolland, Billy Nasty, Colin Dale

probably most of my records were purchased from the excellent Avid Records where
Mearsey worked and
where DJ Snowboy would pop in. Paul the owner of Avid was lovely and if youre out there

Peddley’s night at the Consortium was really open in its music policy and thanks to Nat the owners

Kerrie is talking about the artist Jane Rushton, they’re currently collaborating
. She can be found on the insta handle @jane_rushton_artist and

Pay To Play Scandals !
Common practice amongst SOME venues
Was to demand bands bring a certain number
of people and if they didn’t make the numbers they wouldn’t see a red cent !

But right now whats more pressing is the lack of for help venues and musicians and
technicians are getting in this crisis and the total abandonement of
the creative industries, write to your MP and support venues, it shouldnt have to be fans
who bail out but if you can spare a bit of money please buy music from band camp and
pay for any online events, The Deaf Institue and Gorrilla in manchester were saved thanks
Tim Burgess and SSD and partly thanks to Labour Mp Andy Burnham for raising the issue.

but many more venues are in the Red and didnt make the grade for arts council funding which has been made available at the last minute

Anti Anxiety bliss out Trackz – Sunplus -Casually Here- Algebra Records – Gemcutter – Emma Kate Mathews – Sentics & Seasafari – Talk Talk – notes and spaces

In this crazy time Ive found its best to go over old emails and videos and memories and reconnect with people, I found a great one of Nic Nell at The Lock Tavern, his electronic hyperactive nature and sense of melody and fun where what made me want to put him on the tiny sticky floor of that great disco pub, sadly writing disco Pub just feels sad and the thought of going to a pub now feels like a distant memory …. another was Campari Safari Lock Tavern memory was of the shambolic Wreckless Iraqi who were terrible but lovely people, this is in the last days of Myspace and finding gems in the filth and crap was a full time job! Sadly Wreckless Iraqi are untraceable but I know I just know somewhere in a box of glowsticks and purple hoodies from am app ( dodgy owner sex pest ) their spirit Lives on

back to Nic Nell …

Now he is sharing music on his own label Algebra and its wildly different to his beginnings but with the same attention to detail , novel sounds and wild changes that made his tunes stand out recording as Casually Here

I listened to the Daniel Lopatin- esque in more melodic mode tracks

and was reminded of Gemtree – an artist I was lucky enough to get to know through my work as a Teacher online – Gemtree from Moscow, his productions are crammed with different and abbrasive sounds , some parralels with ARCA as well

go and check out the label, very blissful, like this track here a remix of Sunplus / Rob Shields. This really is a masterwork and broadens the mind, I listened to this cycling along the prom to work in the faded late Corona light past the Chiringuitos and the Palm trees hardly anyone on the prom apart from the crazy cross fit people and other walkers, I saw the father and son I always see at Carihuela and the track seemed to click perfectly, we are all together just trying to keep to routines and living slow life at the moment. rocks r slow life

and here on PELT

and up to date with this colaborative album with lawrence heart on Hotflush, its not really my cup of tea but on slower ambient tracks he shines

stand out material ( for me ) from Algebra is Emma Kate Mathews which shares some DNA coding with aquatic / eco / spacial sounds with Gemcutter and similar in mine and Petes work in Haram Tapes with using field recordings of places visited or passed through , theres also the theme of space between notes (Mark Hollis RIP)

and sounds from around the world, dreaming of spaces and places we would all like to visit … “music is reflected in the EP through the use of spatial recording techniques, binaural panning and the simulation of reflected sound. This forms a virtual sense of depth which subtly expands, contracts and morphs around the listener, creating a spatial narrative from beginning to end.”

it will take you to another space if not another plateu

this is full of good stuff go spend and spend some time with it – boards of canada levels of introspection and wonder will await or whatever youre doing to pass the days

https://soundcloud.com/algebrarecords/sets/sunplus-more-re-colour

and remeber BOP Je !

and Everything you do is a baloon, like Nic told me on an email on the subject of finishing tracks , let it go and dont be precious about making something perfect, let it go or release it , once its mastered its done ! Write record release

write record release

write record release

write record release

if youd like to work on a track , please have this beat https://wsi.li/dl/pauZnHm4KZSRSbsDi/

and email me campari0safari at gmail .com

heres some tracks I made with Markus Sentics with his crunchy guitar lines under the Chessil Beach theme, Im missing the Juraissic coast alot, I watched Broadchurch recently, Dorset people ‘aint like that, Markus is a great musician I hope he puts out some tapes soon ! I miss all my friends and family I cant wait for the new year like everyone elese so I can visit people and places, peace and love if you made it this far through ramblings xxx

Valencia – the arteries, venas, Rutas, d – e – s- t- r – 0 – y

As I sit and write this in Malaga spain in the middle of a second wave of the Pandemic thinking about an era of clubbing seems so other worldly, the concept of attending a club or a concert or both seems so far away like a distant memory and so alien, to join with other people wand dance and to make physical movements in time with the music. That fact, this depressing fact that we have to maintain our distance is sometimes overwhelming, so with looking backward and remebering all the good times ,its with a mind set on the fact that new good times, times of group BLACK CELEBRATION, shall happen again.

My friend Manuel Dolp ( find his cosmic mixes on bordello a parigi ) took a break from partying in ilegal covid rave dens in galleries and lofts and came to stay in Malaga and escape the cold of Vienna, whilst on the beach he told me about something I never knew about Spain,we all know the Balearic story, the ibiza fou,r the same history of how the UK gave the world the gift of the RAve or the culture of staying up all night dancing to repitive beats …. this is a sketchy narative …as we know that like in Italy with Cosmic ( Baldelli / Loda) there was a huge messianic club scene that spawned its own sound and its own customs and generations of rave babies (more on the generation who are inspired by this era of experimentation in tomorows post on Valencia based FILL Lex Records) ..to focus on the early years and not the Makina sound and the degradation of the quality of the music ) , writers ( Carlos Aimeur “Destroy. El corazón del hombre es un abismo”) , DJs , muscians , promoters whose only purpose in life was the eternal dance, La Ruta , the CV-500, the road that connects many clubs and with the E15 and A7 that stretches all along the coast of Spain was the focus for the youth to seek the discos of Valencia and Barcelona much like in the UK had the M25 Orbital road system and the network of warehouses and roads spreding into the commuter belt and farm land with convoys of cars ferrying out to all night raves

Spain’s coastal road network saw ravers driving and partying for the entiriety of the weekend thereby leading to the name la Ruta Destroy , with over ten different clubs condensed into one area the road became synomous with excess and thrills but thanks to Media exposure and the sensationalism (that which fuelled but also damaged the scene ) and police control (Corcuera Law that allowed express searches caused many to flee and many prison terms )

This era like all eras and scenes eventually died..but for over ten years from the early 80s these huge clubs and concert venues like Spook , Puzzle, Barraca , Chocolate N.O.D brought people together from disparate groups to dance to the gothic sounds in the early 80s to new Belgium beats, Kraftwerk , Grauzone, Severed heads , the NEU DEuTsche welle ,

all of these import records gained the nickname fresh cod the new fresh tasty beautiful wax hence the name BACAlAO to describe new fresh music ( Lets imagine you’re under a dictatorship one day and the next a new democracy ,morals are changing , society is opening up and there are these new rhythmic sounds and northern european cold electronics are coming to visit you spelling a future , all powered by a new party drug that made you feel warm and open to new emotions and kept you dancing all night Meskalina or mesk , MDA and caffeine were the actual ingredients MDA precursor to MDMA well why what else is there in life ? DJs Like Fran Lenaers and Rafa Pastor took these joy discs and were some of the first djs to beat mix and create the non stop beat doing away with flamenco and rumba and ushering in the electronic , EBM , Industrial , NDw if it was rhythmic it was on the deck and you can hypnotize and create pure ecstacy, this attitude similar to Baldellis and other italian djs in Rimini, this attitude and DJ culture that was way ahead of most discos in the UK …

La fiesta y nada mas …for many groups this late night all night life was a shock to them, concerts by groups like Killing Joke started at 2 am with a second session at 7am ! or later with people off their heads on meskaline “”Groups like Killing Joke or Play Dead played in halls with a thousand people up to their eyebrows in mescaline, who sang their songs as if they were anthems” the essential book on all of the characters and protangists can be found here apparently and I cant wait to devour it ….Luis Costa’s Book Bacalao! details the whole story as much as can be recoreded from shady memories, including the myth of Bez coming to Valencia after hearing about the mysterious green capsules of Mescaline…more on the legacy left by this time period manana…
