Clash Music Uk Special

David James Broughton – Brainlove star
original posted here

A UK special this one and in the words of one Mark E Smith it’s time to leave the capital! …well not just yet but it must be said its over-rated, expensive and there’s no need to paraphrase Marc Riley (more Fall references for you).

Here’s the ever excellent Brainlove Records from that infernal London. Let’s have a lookie at some of their great artists: Brainlove is pretty much a one man army with John Brainlove running the label, managing artists, promoting and DJing and writing articles, when does he sleep?

Three things on BRNLV really caught my ear — a beautiful track from the Bleeding Heart Narrative EP (listen to the cello come in about half way through — incredible).

Ghost Cats Disappear Into the Night by brainlove

And a fantastic piece of looping drone-pop from Bastardgeist – listen to that lovely lolling bass and tell me that isn’t sublime — if you liked twin shadow and their soft melancholic electronic pop you’ll love this…

Bastardgeist – Shift by brainlove

Now for some really odd mad staring eyed folk pop marked by a distinctive low growly Yorkshire burr – David Thomas Broughton. His is a life affirming coo of a voice but not in a grating too fey listen how be-cardiganed and loomy I can be way – I’m hooting and howling over this. It’s way too good to stay in the margins of freak folk — he’s obviously got a sense of humour about himself and it’s a very charming thing he’s made — get to know this mad bastard now!

David Thomas Broughton – Ain’t Got No Sole

Now as promised we are out of LDN and over to the west country to visit some mad West Country bastards — argh! ketamine for breakfast drinking cider out of a dead rooks beak and all that. There’s plenty more to the West Country than free parties and hydroponic cultivation but all that adds up to a heady range of influences which feed into the strange discordant teeth rattling NOISEs coming out of the Hacker Farm.

They first caught my attention when they sent me a mail with just the header HACKER FARM, nervously I opened the email expecting twenty million types of diseases to creep through my computer what I found was a link to their crazed music made in deepest darkest Somerset — specifically the cultural hot bed of Yeovil! (The local football team have a hard as nails casual firm you have been warned Hereford!) Working out of an old dis-used farm the hackers create eerie looping discordant ambient noise shying away from any hype they slowly release their electronic apple saft into the world. And their juice is good!

Already sipping from their appley cup is a hero of mine: Simon Reynolds picked their album as a top release from 2011. Hacker Farm, Pound-land in their own words it’s “A celebration of the home-made, the salvaged and the hand-soldered. DIY electronics performed on obsolete tech and discarded, post-consumerist debris. Make-do and mend. Broken music for a Broken Britain.”

Very west politic very good go buy Poundland direct from the grower:

Here they are freaking out the very excellent Vortex club in the Turkish community / fixie riding handle bar mustache drop out paradise of Dalston (that London again) bringing the spirits of the cow shed to the urban miasma:

….now short pop over the River Severn to Cardiff home to Counter Cultural Heroes Super Furry Animals and a whole host of ambient / noise freaks. One such freak is Justin Toland who records under various names such as Location Baked. and most recently Stuttgarter Strasse

A Deutsche electronische themed tribute to South Wales in his own words: “Stuttgarter Strasse…Road to the future”..

Part homage to a certain legendary German synth quartet, part history lesson at the Isaac Asimov School for Young Robots, Stuttgarter Strasse is the sound of teknologische musik in an era of progress and a spirit of European friendship. “Ansichtskarten aus Wales (“Postcards from Wales”), a 4-track EP based on an imaginary road trip through South Wales by the aforementioned German synth pioneers will be available to download for your listening pleasure in November 2011, with a vinyl release planned for 2012.”

Keep an ear out for this youngster – interesting art and music concepts are bound to flow from his digital hive over the coming years…

Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti – Witchhunt Suite for WWIII Animal Charm Arts

I’m not going to write about the music too much as countless people are already wifflin and wafflin away.  I find the visual content to be the perfect accompaniment to this message.

The thing that I like about Ariel Pink/Animal Charm’s use of 80s and 90s tape is the use of really mundane imagery. What I feel when watching it, is that the tangible world is completely faked. We are inured to violence we dont see it as real – America / Britain’s war / The West’s constant war is just a movie script now playing endlessly on networked news we cant see an end. Slowly inwardly western culture is eating itself . The end of days, a creepy sense of dread and I just generally feel a grim fascination watching all that imagery and the jarring sound and the eerie refrain ” We Got Him We Got him, We Got Him.”

Using found imagery cut and spliced together pastiching the dumb fucking bull shit that we see everyday like Macdonalds adverts – Soundbites drift in and out of the mix – see the plastic cheese and plastic meat, hear the voice rapping saying “we at macdonalds are here to make you happy.” Through … plastic cheese …. Ariel Pink and Animal Charm are tapping into the ideas of someone like Paul Mcarthy  or Jenny Holzer  or any number of visual artists  making high art  or accessible art (art for all ? art in the digital world / endless copies / could go on forever about this …) about  the visual culture that surrounds our every  second like smearing nutella all over your cerebral cortex in the 16 minutes of the film …incidentally  a giant inflatable dog turd Paul Mcarthy installed in a swiss art show flew away in a storm and bizarrely smashed up a childrens nurseries nearly killing the children inside –  giant dog turd art attack ! horrible strange and true ban this filth!   …

Back to the video.
The constant barrage of imagery comes up with some constants and iconography. Where the west is the crusading avenger Batman. Batman being the perfect emblem of how strange western culture is, full of bizarre messages and totemic imagery. A man dressed head to toe in black spandex, saving lives and defeating enemies of freedom, whilst living a double life as a charitable business man? Batman is now a live stage show as well as every other form of franchise – a very kid friendly package of Bondage S&M themes – So Ariel  – Genuis or piss taker – maybe a bit of both … who isnt these days? … I cant get enough of Haunted Grafitti its perfect pop and I deeply regret that I didnt go to see him in Bristol when Ariel Pink’s Haunted Grafitti played for Ileagal Seagull (Brilliant DIY Bristol promoters )

Digressing again!  The dominant culture is what comes across through all the clips. The might of America  .We got him, we got him, we got him. I cant get that out of my head now and that to me is perfect pop something melodic that stays with you . He’s a talented artist and collaborator on all levels maybe a genuis and an exciting conduit for lots of other great music – I would never of heard of R stevie moore if it wasn’t for him and and channeling themes of dislocation and alienation in these END OF DAYS (say it in  Arnie accent) we live in… put simply an artist making interesting semiotics and sound in a palpable form that is easy to take in – a gateway to a whole world of other interesting music

Really hoping to hear from the guy/girl who made the video … ANIMAL CHARM

watch and enjoy for what it is and other Animal Charm Vid hits – great video art – no questions answered – TV OD!

D/R/U/G/S do Good Things to Your Lugs (holes)

Hello 2011 looks like there’s going to be more great stuff made with cheap tech and put out there via the interweb – this year i have to make something a bit more advanced than a 25 minute mini mix ( self flagellating oneself with a copy of sound on sound magazine)

anyway enough of my electronic ambitions heres D/R/U/G/S with some loaded questions ahead of their trip down to One Party State the electronic oasis in a world of Trilbey wearing tossers at the Barfly on tonight! – D/R/U/G/S grew up on Underworld , Warp Records , Eno, Boards of canada and Aphex Twin by the sounds of it and have been making tunes / remixes with Egyptian Hip Hop those fellow Mancunian candidates for greatness – unlike Delphic these guys actually take you to ecstatic places with their music

here’s an interview slightly leaning towards the opinion that England is a bit shagged out – we need another summer of Love ! bring on the power pingers drug lords of holland and russia!

Have you ever been to an outdoor rave / free party / warehouse event that was DIY and was it good ?

Nah, we don’t mix with those crowds ie people with the money to put something like that on. I think you get shit like that happening
in places like Oxford, not grime cities like Manchester and London. There’s this big feeling especially in Manchester among people our age
of having missed out on some golden generation of rave or whatever, i dont see it like that at all.

What do you think of Tiesto / Swedish House Mafia / Guetta et al

These are like massive mainstream dance guys right? I couldnt say ive ever heard any of their beats although I probably will have done while walking past some hideous bar where people with jobs go. I can’t deal with that production style at all, super compressed pounding beats, the synths all squelched into a huge mess of sound.

What do you think of the idea of conscription ( compulsory social work/army ) I live in Austria and they still have it and it seems to keep the young uns busy– I think its a pretty good idea but then again i wouldn’t want to do it!

Im not sure that arming and training the feral youth of this country to run faster is such a good idea.

Do you like Britain in 2010 ?

Nope. Too many people leaving angry Youtube comments. Few people our age even seem interested in anything creative. It’s all fucked.
We are so far away from what we could be its untrue.

Do you think we are going to see the end of the world or serious discomfort for us spoilt westerners ?.

Most westerners live in serious discomfort, at least in this country. The wealth % split is outrageous.

Is there a point in voting anymore ? Could you give a rats assssss

I think last year just about summed it up, you vote Lib Dem and get Tory. The agenda is clearly already set. No matter who you vote for
they’re guaranteed to be capitalist scum fucks out to line the pockets of whoever paid for them to get there in the first place.

questions OVER!

well there you go – erudite and angry young men disenfranchised with the UK – time to find the Neu Welt when the government no longer serves the people – just leave and get adopted by a new one – I dont want to sound preachy but since i moved away i realize what a shit pit the UK is. Sorry! thers lots to Love but for me … nah too many DFS sales and constant barrage of people trying to skank you, shank you an what not … rant over

anyway shameless plug -go see them tonight 8/01 /11 barfly

and in Austria 27th Jan at Market TBA Love Club with Becoming Real! whoop – big line up with Metaxis too from austro land

check here with TBA mag

Getting to know people really well in hot sweaty rooms is a pastime that’s not going away soon as long as there’s people like ears have eyes and body hammer as I mentioned before in a previous post they eschew big name bookings and keep it simple with word of mouth and low level promotion and do their utmost to keep it friendly and intimate with amazing visuals and a relaxed attitude to health and safety and smoking laws. Good parties dont often happen in big clubs least not in my experience in the last 2 or 3 years bar the odd night at fabric from adventures in the beetroot filed or kill em all but back to the point. Ears Have Eyes parties have no corporate influence its a hot sweaty room of your friends or friends to be and a classic line up of musical enthusiasts and a broad musical palette from post punk to punk funk weird jazz bits and bobs good bits of tech house disco old and new , warm techno and jacking material you really should investigate more and sign up and find out
Mr Jack and Honorary Campari Safari dj is a resident with one of the best collections and pair of ears for a groove

heres a deep techy acidy mix from him

their next party will be a Caroline True Records party which has some real legends read on ….

Ears Have Eyes Present a Caroline True Records Party Wednesday, 10 November 2010

We at EHE are very excited to present a Caroline True Records party at our favorite secret east London hangout on Saturday 27th November.
Joining the EHE residents on the night will be:

John K (CTR)
Mark Fellows (CTR)
Steve Walsh (CTR/Manicured Noise)

Caroline True Records is inspired by all the great records that we’ve all listened to late at night over time. CTR has collaborated with many people in it’s first 5 years including Paul Hartnoll of Orbital, Fred Deakin of Airside and Lemon Jelly, Rob Lloyd from punk legends the Prefects and later Independent Musical legends and Peel favourites the Nightingales. Also,Jon Savage, Punk Rock authority and national cultural treasure, currently making an album of Post-Punk favourites (and not yet faves) with CTR. Young and fresh Bronx based DJ and remixers of great current note Pocketknife and Cousin Cole are also label advocates.

The plan is-there is no plan. No marketing agenda. No niche. We have fans too. Lawrence from post-Punk legends Felt/Denim and Ben Thompson-journo extraordinaire come to mind..Hey-we’ll see what happens-right?

CTR’s DJ musical agenda stretches from Post-Punk and Dub through to Disco and way beyond.

Steve Walsh will be amongst the Djs on the evening. Ex NME and Zig-Zag writer and vocalist/guitarist with early eighties/Late seventies punk-funk leaders Manicured Noise. Original co-founder of The Flowers Of Romance along with Sir Sid Vicious and Keith Levene of P.I.L . A rennaisance man. So good that P.I.L even named a track after them.

Manicured Noise:

Manicured Noise were a late seventies/early eighties Manchester based group. They released two singles and recorded a BBC Radio session before they split. They were rediscovered and re-assessed a couple of years ago with the CTR Northern Stories 1978-80 compilation which gained some great reviews from all over the world. Since then the band has seized the attention globally of very many music lovers and Djs -with a strong Argentinian MN fanbase owing in some part to the connection with the Argentine 80’s Punk/Reggae superstar Luca Prodan. Fred Deakin of Lemon Jelly / Airside has remixed their tracks – along with current NYC Disco enfant – terriblesPocketknife and Cousin Cole. “Faith” remains a classic 7″ of the Post-Punk period.

“Metronome” has enjoyed repeated plays on London and NYC dancefloors:

I didn’t really take this seriously when I saw it on pinglewood a while ago there was a photo with your man from Twin Shadow, a rather elaborate hair do and a yellow balloon and some wag had written that he looked like Richard Ayoade from the IT crowd the channel 4 comedy series and music video director- it all smelt a bit like a Chris Morris prank so I didn’t give it a listen – now I wish that id caught onto his music sooner as the music is heart wrenchingly beautiful and he seems like a charming man with pop star qualities – rare to find that these days in this slag heap of under nourished vitamin e lacking synth bashing wastrels – i read somewhere that he’s compared to a black Morrissey – that’s a bit cheap and throwaway – comparisons like that are just lazy – how about a more uptempo Leaonard Cohen !? ! the lyrics and delivery are spot on – ok that’s enough tittle tattle go buy the album from rough trade its got grizzly bear man chris taylor at the controls and together they have made a superbly blissful melancholy album Do You Like Talk Talk ? you’ll love this the slow vid is a parody of those 80s CK ads and the second one is from where I don’t know – it fits perfectly – triumphant youth walking around looking cool on the corners blazing a ree and scaring grannies on the streets – its my fave past time except im a bit old for that now and the paunch isnt a great look…. waffle waffle enough about my mispent youth in tough as nails Bournemouth…. watch and learn and buy !
