KOOL KEITH INVENTED DUB STEP / LONDON SHOW 31ST MAY

A yo FACE ACHE!

I saw a facebook posting from a geezer i know, goes by the name of troll 23 – very fine dj check him oooot!- he is supporting Kool Keith in London on May 31st at islington metal works – another rapper with the same qualities and hyper intelligence of the Beastie Boys (RIP MCA ) , Tribe Called Quest , De La Soul, Pharcyde, Diggable Planets et al – golden age, 90s best of times, no gun bull shit , complex rhymes all those acolytes blah blah. I’m sure you already know, anyway hes supporting Kool Keith and this set me off searching for some of his later stuff as I really only know a bit about him from Ultra Magnetic MCs and the Doctor Octagon project which were introduced to me by my mate Mikey P or MIKA P or P man paper everyday sushi banger , who is also a mutual friend of TROL and I through a guy called James Turner who is another great lost DJ who needs to step back to the wheels much like MIKE P ….anywayzzzzz . Yes sorry as I was saying `I looked and found the Kool Keith album from ’99 and found evidence that Kool Keith predated all that Lot such as Skream and the DMZ lot and Burial with his frankly to my ears boring music… IE Dubstep with its faltering dub wubble

( not as fun drum and bass albeit great to listen to on headphones ) and invented the bass wubble on Im seeing Robots – you cant deny the similarity to the wubble of dubstep and this is from 99 on a criminally unknown album http://youtu.be/gOIgcb6sBqc

GO BUY a Ticket to his london show you shits! 😉 its only a tenner – fuck ! i was going to fork out 32 euro to see Gza in vienna then i thought NAHHHH! Ill only be waiting for liquid swords !!

BUY BUY BUY FLY FLY FLY! TICKETS YO TICKETS YO!
10 SPOT FOR THE MAD GENIUS OF KOOL KEITH thats fucking sweet !

BEPE LODA @ LASERMAGNETIC – HORSE AND GROOM 12TH NOV

12th November
The Horse & Groom, 28 Curtain Road, London EC2A
9pm-4am

tickets here

Lasermagnetic’s monthly at the Horse & Groom continues in November on both floors and they much like usat campari safari / ITALO ITALIANS have a HUGE crush on all things italo dance their Italian Special this weekend sees …a rare London appearance by Beppe Loda, one of Italy’s very first generation DJ’s and closely associated with being one of the originators of the AFRO SCENE, which was pioneering the slow motion sound back in the early 80’s in the Northern Italian regions… by embracing a variety of styles…eanging from disco, funk and obscurities via afro rhythms, Brazilian, fusion music and spaced out rock to new wave, a touch of italo, industrial, and the much contested Cosmic, Melody Mecca, Chicago & early 80s experimental synth music such as this by Hideki Matsutake ( now chairman of the japanese synth programmers association)

….Those who have heard the tapes recorded at clubs like Typhoon can hear and see the maestro in action and witness his brilliant mixing and enthusiastic displays-

we can only attest that the style of DJing and presentation was and still is probably the most creative one that has ever existed, as experimental-ism and connecting genres via the mix, slowing down and speeding up records were the main force behind this movement. lets just call it the golden era of club culture! when genres mattered not and dancers wanted to hear a dj taking risks as Beppe attests in this video he would like to be known as an alternative music dj not lazily labelled as a cosmic …

Beppe, associated with the Typhoon Club and the later years at Cosmic club has clearly influenced generations of leftfield music lovers and contemporary DJ’s who embrace what is today labeled as balearic, collectors disco, and even edits!
Beppe made his first Lasermagnetic appearance back in 2008, together with his Typhoon posse…Lucifer Lightjay (who started at Baia degli Angeli with Bob & Tom), Dj Daniele from Les Cigalles & Le Pois…and Dr. Nishimura (Discosessions Japan)…
We are not sure what he’s going to play this time, but be sure to catch master mixer Loda in action, his technical skills are fun to watch, too …

Lasermagnetic invited another Italian contemporary electronic music producer, Fabrizio Mammarella to join the dots between past, present and the future. FM has recorded for like Bear Funk, Rollerboys Recordings & Slow Motion and DJ-ed internationally for a number of years now.

Local support comes from 2 of East London’s finest party crews Pearlflash (this time in the form of Benjamin Lau) & ReviveHER (Bi Bop), who through their parties and taste in music are carrying on the spirit and fashion from where it all started.
Keep an eye out for these guys there’s plenty of more good work to come in the near future…some of their previous guests have included the likes of Casco, TBD (Justin V & Lee Douglas) Lovefingers, Baris K, Chida & COSMES and recently Tim Sweeney. SALUTE !

Indoor Life – Jorge Socarras – Catholic – Patrick Cowley – Simon Reynolds – Brandt Brauer Frick – Macro Records Berlin – Elektro Guzzi – Eternal Heroes Vienna

what ho ?

totally by chance i Met Jorge Through a very good friend Stavros Kargas ( the nicest bear i ever did meet ) in Barcelona july last year at Razzmataz when i djed with Fab May Day … we fbooked back and forth and he sent me a link to a new project hes working on with Mathias Schaffhauser of hey Little Girl fame but also respected minimal / tech house productions – more on this when they release …

after looking up Jorge i was a bit miffed to find that there is little mention of his work with Patrick Cowley with the group Indoor life and Catholic their collaboration out there – why didnt i know about this beautiful soulful abstract ( yet still funky ) music ? definetly deserves more attention … hopefully if I and other wibblers of the web go on about the greatness of their magnificence resulting in more dues …. which brings me to note after almost finishing reading rip it up and start again and theres no mention in the San Francisco section about Cowley or Jorge – massive oversight ! but an amazing book along side the other Simon Reynolds tome Energy Flash (which is going to get a 2012 update ) and recent Retromania which pretty much nails it in the theory that humanity has pretty much run out of fresh ideas in music – yet to read it but cant wait to nerd out on it – simon reynolds writing style is brilliant he speaks with conviction and doesn’t sound smarmy …

Anyway back to Jorge and his work as Indoor Life and Catholic

Indoor Life was formed in San Franciso and moved to New York and comprised of
J.A. Deane
Bob Hoffnar
Jorge Socarras

with contributions from

Patrick Cowley (first EP)
Sabella (first EP)
Sally Be
Oren Bloedow

Indoor Life Relativity side A stream then search for vinyl on discogs

Sunshine Superman

Indoor Life Indoor Life

Contre Nature

buy the mp3s (in 320 kps naturally ) – buyer beware itunes is shite and gives you 192 which isnt good enough for playing out for all you jocks out there …. speaking of jocks the great Francois K plays out Indoor Life in his sets – FK of the legendary and unpretentious dance parties Body and Soul NY institution and dare i say it dance-floor educator – Body and Soul made it to 15 years this weekend just gone …

I digress !

So Catholic – what a work – Cowley a synth master … Jorge with his distinctive soulful rich voice – I would go so far as saying that this has the sublime qualities of Arthur Russel or even Talking Heads only more reflective and outre – listening to ‘You Laugh At My Face’ you can feel the smarting feeling of unrequited love or at least missing out on a good shag …. Saturday Night Heart Ache in the Castro …. Jorge sounds proud and resilient his voice is really distinct – the eerie synths and pads create a really jarring atmosphere given all the room needed – the album was canned by cowleys label Megatone only to languish for over 30 years and today it sounds completely fresh with its Eno- esque traits – dig up the ep which was made Socarras & Cowley buy mp3s and dig up the vinyl and potentially come and see Jorge In Vienna at Eternal Heroes !

Catholic was unearthed recently in 2009 on the Macro Label from Berlin – Macro also the Home to Electro Guzzi a Viennese Band of rock gypsies making syncopated dance music with live instruments and produced by Patrick Pulsinger – ( theres a lot of it about see also Brandt Brauer Frick who may or may not of nicked Elektro Guzzis ideas ? )

I have to give credit to Fritz Ploeckinger who runs the amazing disco and house haven that is Market Records in vienna for telling me about Elektro Guzzi – proof that going to a record shop is stil the best way to learn about music

feel the Austrian darkness of …Elektro Guzzi

now compare with their German Cousins Brandt Brauer Frick

A Love From Outer Space – Andrew Weatherall + Sean Johnston The Drop 17/02 + Haules Baules: The Eastern Connection

heeeeey rat fans ( Roland Rat might be coming back soon for a feature film so I hear from my connections in the world of cinema ) so the raybans and stone wash combo is still going to be big look this year for all you waifs and strays but i didnt come to talk of the cloth or talking rats in films nooooo sir clay davis !

I was a lucky shit this weekend just gone as I went to Perugia in Italy to warm up for Mr Andrew Weatherall with Sammy d ( massive thanks to Fab May Day + Stefano Tucci the gracious host and genius behind Friday Im In Rock and Remixer Of Tiger! Shit! Tiger! Tiger!) and amazing dj ( new order to italo classics xx dubs and edits

Mr Weatherall along with top disconaught Sean Johnston (Hardway Brothers ) will be hosting another of their A Love From Outer Space parties at the Drop on Thursday 17/2 – head along if you like music – and what music! – the weird and wonderful will be played all within a lower tempo – artwork is by Mr Weatherall who is a dab hand at printmaking – is there nothing he cant do ? A real renaissance man. ***!!!EDIT!*** Sean Johnston has just corrected me that Andrew art directed but credit has to be given to Logan Fisher of Haules Baules fame for the excellent typography – I must post about Haules Baules NOW as his mixes and trax are right up my and (hopefully ) your strasse – with tracks in his mixes from Tom Trago , The Revenge , Mike Burns ( a vienna disco maker – another producer to post ) Morgan Geist and his own releases with lovely hand made screen printed sleeves Argo and new track to be released Hit Me Slowly – based in Bucharest Romania hes doing what look like great parties with people like Kink , Rodion and the aforementioned Sean Johnston – party over here, party over there – Come East Disco Soldiers. go to his blog there is a wealth of mixes tracks and beautiful clean artwork – http://haulesbaules.com/

here be a portal to his mixes

some sartorial notes on the man as if you have taken any interest in music from the acid house warrior ( bocca juniors , primal scream, sabres of paradise two lone swordsmen , fuck buttons and under his own moniker ) you’ll already know hes a genius and a snappy dresser

he wore a rather fetching blue chunky knit sweater, turned up heavy selvedge denim vintage levis – a smock type prison inmate shirt – and has been keeping the moustache and beard in excellent condition – amazing sinister tats he puts younger Ras Claart DJs to shame ( those with innumerable shoddy merchandise , clothing lines, baseball caps and other bits of tat ) – stylish , knowledgeable, erudite, charming and engaging – my hero basically … go and buy all his works here !
they say you should never meet your heroes but sometimes they turn out to be great and quite surprising at their commitment to playing nearly every weekend – hes out every weekend road hounding it playing everywhere to huge and small crowds alike playing Rock N Roll to pounding techno – talking about music he likes he tipped his hat to the The Jim Jones Revue and we talked of the genius of King Salami and the Cumberland Three ( a previous Campari Safari stage gracer along with those crazy kids Thee Vicars new Dirt Bombs lp and lots of other rock and roll filth mongers if you havent already tuned in there’s his bbc 6 music show on
sunday 13th feb
where you’ll hopefully hear some tunes I offloaded/asked nicely to play stopmakingme(kill em all /bang gang) , wolfram (gomma/permanent vacation and those gurtle garage Austro bandits black shampoo – fingers crossed he plays them!

WILD GEESE , MODEL 500 , BODY HAMMER PARTIES, JACK LOOKING BACK, UNDER_SCORE PARTIES BRISTOL

hold tight theres a lot to read here !
I’M feeling wistful for pounding bass from free parties/ i need a time machine to take Wild Geese Touch back, way back and hear this coming out of a 100 k rig somewhere in the hampshire /dorset/ someset region with the sun coming up and in a misty field and buzzing on a yellow callie or a rhubarb and custard. I fucking love playing this out after 3 months but the fact that are hardly any ecstatically enhanced people out here in Vienna out there to get the full effect is saddening – Come on Wien get on one feel this! book em book em Market or Enix ! feel the plaintive horns at 6.00 wish it would go on forever…. top buzz nice1 bring that e sunshine indoors somebody please if you are in london you can hear them at one of the great tayos tracksuit parties along with david rodigan and amazing dj on the rise roxanne roll who puts on parties with vim and is a top selector parties details here apparently there’s free beer !!

here’s an older remix they did Do The Right Thing from Metronomy

check their chart on phonica and buy buy buy its all fresh, all popping with stuff like the new Model 500 which track ‘Huesca’ will make you fly e lightened or not and that’s for another post of misty eyed waffling about the godfathers ….

speaking of acid house spirit keepers of the flame …
check Body Hammer taking their name from the
japanese cyber punk classic tetsuo- the body hammer rough raw vintage acid from Joe Hart from bloc weekend and if im not mistaken a man I have had the great pleasure to dj and natter with about classic tunes – Paul Purgas from Bristol a very passionate acid man who has productions under the name Empty Set he djed a very basic Campari Safari in the bar of the croft with Duncan from Underscore a brilliant crew of techno and dubstep promoters from Bristol who are sorely missed! i really regret not going to more of their parties as they had killer line ups and im only just getting back in touch with classic techno….

check this terrible flyer that was knocked up by me in two minutes ! real underscore parties were however amazing with people like bodycode kode 9 sleeparchive scion and an early supporter of dubstep heavy weight pinch – who played a party in Vienna recently
