Lying To Liars – Austro Indie – chit chat – this and that

Lying to Liars are a young Austrian Band who I can see great potential in – thee lyricist and singer Markus and I had a nice chat about Mental Health , Austria, Bristol and the band Lying To Liars and how they got together they are influenced by – Modest Mouse, Pavement, Neutral Milk Hotel, 80ies UK – Smiths, New Order, Echo & Bunnymen and a bit of Sonic Youth and Nirvana they play understated indie and Markus has a very special voice and style and great lyrics

me : whats the first record you bought?

Markus: Nirvana Nevermind

me: how old were you ?

Markus:11

Me : really, geil!

Markus:

:):) the second was some bravo-hits sampler, though, hehe , the band actually got my attention through the “unplugged” release, which was promoted everywhere

Me :
so an early learner !

Markus:
:):)
Me :
Did you have mtv 2 in austria?
or whatever it was ?

Markus:
nope at least we didnt
Me :
yeah in the uk it arrived around 2000 i think – pre myspaz!?

Markus:

but yeah viva started in the 90ies and mtv i guess too, for people who had cable tv, which we didnt
i had older sisters though, they got me into good music, like nirvana or stuff like offspring

Me :
did you have tv parties mit kiffing (blazing in Austrian) and drinking ?
Markus:

yeah we did, but i always had low blood pressure so when i smoked pot it knocked me out quickly til i learned to say no, that took courage :D:D
Me :

so you had black outs – loss of consciousness?
Markus:
oh and the soundtrack was sublime, up and down
no not real black outs, just got extremely tired and dizzy and i couldn’t articulate properly
( Markus means the band Sublime)
Me :
I don’t know them ill have to have a listen …
Markus:
they’re from long beach, california
Me :
so when did you Lying To Liars get together as a band ?
Markus:
that was like 14 months ago, an old friend (lisa) introduced me to her bf ( Florian) and i was already pretty drunk so i boasted: i make music, he said he does too and we decided to get together

ah so i just presumed you and Flo had been mates for a long time
Markus:
nope :):)
i actually used to live with guys from the band Ja, Panik and there was this old guitar lying around that no none used so i took it up oh and there I also met our bassist
we’re old mates
Me :
so you both have a similar background in music and so now you are making a band, what sort of artists excite you lately ? any Austrian bands that you like ? Ive heard of Ja Panik (they are actually really great, and they sing in German and much better to hear their fast jerky piano led indie pop in their native tongue rather than clunky wordplay and derivative time themes and shouty chorues – which is a bit of a theme in Teutonic pop at the mo ! )
Markus:
yeah i like “A Thousand Fuegos” a lot, and M185
the latter ones do a lot of 90ies-us-noise like sonic youth

“A Thousand Fuegos
i’ve heard of them but not M185
Me :

ahh cool ill check them out – Vienna really likes noisey rock and experimental stuff – least thats what ive found – unfortunately there’s a lot of shite out there too …

Markus:

you should check them out, i saw em live on the last Gürtel Nightwalk, i loved it
Me :
i like that there’s a good scene here for more left field rock …
bit like Bristol in England
Markus:

oh yeah?
but that all happened in the past couple of years, really
Me :
its quite insular and people are a little guarded of their scenes and put on gigs where there’s not much promotion -alot like bristol you have to dig a bit and do your research
Markus:
yeah i like that and really it seems like the only option for kinda-independent artists these days
Me :
14:26
yeah bands here that are interesting arent really gigging much outside of Austria or Germany which is a shame as theres some great ones … Sex Jams I really like them the singers a bit like a brattier Kim Gordon its a straight copy but i dont see anything wrong with that and Black Shampoo really like them – snarley fuzzzy garage … about Bristol there’s loads of amazing bands in bristol that are quite happy to play diy parties and nights just in bristol and that could piss on alot of bands and they dont give a fuck if you like them or not …
Markus:
are you from Bristol? or from London?
Me :
Im from Bournemouth on the south coast and moved to Bristol at 23 and then London at errr 27 i think?
,are you a wiener blood?
Markus:
nope I’m quite the opposite, i come from the alps, vorarlberg
i grew up in a 2000-people village
Me: wow – isolation! an alpine lad!
Markus: Im not familiar with Bristol any good bands from there ?
Me:
well some of biggest of the last 20 years to come out of there are Massive Attack and Portishead, Roni Size , some smaller ones but influential ones like The Pop Group, The Blue Aeroplanes, but loads of great bands come from there – Gravenhurst on Warp you would love
Me:
when did you move to Vienna ?
Markus:
2003 to study journalism

Me:
was it hard moving to the biggish city ?
Markus:
I don’t know when i think back i realize i didn’t really think about it much, just seemed the normal thing for me to do.
looking back i realize i didn’t really think about a lot of things :):)
Me:
yeah ich auch!
such is life ! :):)
Markus:

I conditioned myself to block things out from early on, actually
Me:
its a good /bad skill to have …
I have trouble blocking things out im envious of people who can concentrate and make themselves kind of robotic …
people who are really driven and singular…
Markus:

yep. for me it turned out to be too much (blocking out), cause i get weird dreams from back in the day…..

The rest of the Interview turns personal but this is a great songwriting talent and you should look out for them they’ll be playing soon In Vienna soon as the band are fully evolved and that wont be long …
